Gua Africa has been granted 15 acres of land in the town of Leer, by the government of South Sudan. Our goal is to build a high quality education centre for the whole community, which is to be called the Emma Academy, as a legacy to Emma McCune who lies at rest in Leer.
In 2010 UNESCO calculated that only 1,600 children completed Secondary School across the whole of South Sudan, a region 2.5 times bigger than the UK.
After the successful completion of the primary school phase we are now looking forward to building Leer’s first ever secondary school! For photos of the primary school work please visit our Flikr page.
Alongside the school there will be accommodation blocks, sporting, music and vocational training facilities, as well as Leer's first ever community library. We are currently working hard with the local community, local engineers and international architects to develop the most sustainable construction technique specific to Leer. We plan to use an innovative soil stabilisation technology that will also provide the community with the ability to produce inexpensive buildings in the future.
