Gua supporter Stephen Timmer is currently in preparation for the Chicago marathon which he is going to run for Gua Africa. The marathon takes place on the 10th October and Stephen has set himself the ambitious challenge of raising $10,000 from 10,000 people donating $1. He is taking his inspiration from our founder Emmanuel Jal's Lose To Win campaign where Emmanuel has only eaten one meal per day for over 620 days (at time of print) until we raise the money for Phase 1 of the Emma Academy Project. To donate to Stephen's effort please visit his fantastic website: www.runforguaafrica.com and click on the donate tab, alternatively you can send a cheque to: Run for Gua Africa, PO Box 1926, Orlando, Florida 32802.
Committed Gua Africa supporter Augusta McDonnell from Montana, USA is planning to affiliate with her local Rotary Club in order to fundraise for Gua Africa at an upcoming festival called Oktober Fest. Augusta is working to develop a strong supporter network for Gua in her town and is generating a lot of interest in our work. Keep checking out this page for information on the results of her efforts!
Preparations are taking place for a screening of our founder's movie War Child documentary in Toronto Canada in aid of Gua Africa due to take place at the beginning of October. Keep an eye here for information.
A big thank you to...
The S4 class at the Strathaven Academy in South Lanarkshire who did a series of fundraising events after hearing about our "wonderful work". The class got to throw wet sponges at their teachers and the teachers took part in a 'Beat the goalie' competition. One of the teachers got the students to sponsor him to shave his head and there was also a cold-bean eating competition! A lot of fun was had by all and they raised a fantastic £400! A big thank you goes out to everyone involved.
A big thank you to...
Vania Simittchieva and Melissa Casey for organising Gua's most recent fundraising event in New York. The event (aimed at UN interns, of which Vania is one) took place at the bar/restaurant Calico's. Along with paying an entrance fee attendees also made donations, watched Emmanuel Jal's documentary War Child and bought Gua Africa and Emmanuel Jal merchandise. The event raised a fantastic $535 and is just the first of several to take place in New York over the next several months, so keep your eye on the Upcoming events section and on our Facebook page for notifications.
A big thank you to...
A class of Grade 8 Global Citizenship Students at the Moody Middle School, Port Moody, Canada. According to a letter we received, "they took on the very sticky job of sorting and counting the schools recycling in order to raise funds for our work in Sudan and Kenya. Education and child soldiers were two issues that we felt strongly about, so when we found your organization, we knew that was how we could help." What an ingenious way to raise funds and clean up the environment!
A big thank you to...
The Sixth Form at The John Fisher School in Croydon who took part in a World Cup charity event. Their footballing exploits raised just over £100, so everyone at Gua Africa would like to say a big thank you to everyone that took part.
A big thank you to...
Laura Cassidy, who ran the BUPA Great Edinburgh Run in aid of Gua back in May. She was inspired to run the 10 kilometre race after hearing our founder Emmanuel Jal give a speech about his life. Emmanuel's story of a childhood lost had a great effect on her; Laura is a Primary School teacher and feels very strongly about the importance of education and a child's right to safety. She managed to raise a fantastic £305, even going £5 over her target! Everyone at Gua would like to thank Laura for her hard work in raising money for our cause.
