As our relationship with the Leer community strengthens we are constantly learning of new ways we can help benefit the children. On a visit to the Mary John school we came across a fantastic opportunity to immediately help improve the lives of several hundred young Leer students.
The school receives no financial assistance from the government and is independently organised by the local parents who manage to scrape together enough to pay the teachers each month. It was evident that one way the students and parents could be significantly helped was by having a water source, for daily use by the students and so that future building work could be undertaken. After negotiating support from Assistance Mission Africa, who are experts in installing hand pumps and small water distribution systems, it was decided that GUA Africa would fund the immediate construction of a well at the school site. By the end of our field trip the well had almost been completed and the school children now have a local water source!
